The training system called a polyconic vase was born between the 1920s and 1930s from the studies carried out by Roventini and Tonini between Tuscany and Umbria.
These suggested giving up the dichotomous vase shape and nipping, to raise the olive tree according to a new form.
According to their studies, to ensure the greatest amount of light and the best ventilation to all portions of the foliage, the skeletal structure of the olive tree had to develop on three or four primary branches, impaled on a single trunk and ending each on a single luxuriant peak, which developed on a single axis inclined by about 40 ° / 45 ° and from which the secondary branches departed.
Modern studies of the physiology of the olive tree have confirmed, in recent years, how much this form of pruning is respectful of the needs of the plant, regardless of the territory in which it is located.
Today, thanks to the development of materials and technologies, which have made available to qualified and certified pruners, cutting tools that are increasingly safe and precise, telescopic, manual, petrol and electric, this type of pruning is carried out with extreme precision and in total safety for the operators, who operate exclusively from the ground.
